e-Conomy SEA 2024: Online transportation and food operators survive despite increasing competition in Indonesia

New competitors, new strategies as sector hits $9 billion GMV.

This post is part of the e-Conomy SEA 2024 report exploring various sectors in Indonesia’s evolving digital economy landscape.

The digital transportation and food delivery sectors are on a steady growth trajectory of 13% YoY through 2024 and a combined GMV of $9 billion. This momentum will continue through 2030, when both sectors are projected to reach $20 billion in GMV. This growth underscores the resilience of digital transportation and food delivery operators as they adapt to changing market dynamics and increasing competition.

The drivers of GMV growth for online transportation are the recovery in demand for daily and international travel, high adoption and penetration into small cities, and intensive promotion by new operators to attract more users.

Online food delivery services in Indonesia are growing rapidly as consumers demand for convenient dining options. The GMV of the food delivery sector is expected to reach $6 billion (USD) by 2024. Operators are adapting their offerings to expand their market share—from affordable everyday meals to premium restaurant options. Local players have tailored their menus, delivery models, and pricing configurations to meet varying customer needs.

The e-Conomy SEA 2024 report will continue to explore these shifts, offering deep insights into how Indonesia’s digital ecosystem is adapting to address the challenges and opportunities emerging amidst Southeast Asia’s growing digital economy.
