Coordinating Ministry for Community Empowerment Presents Holistic Solutions to Enhance the Welfare of Migrant Workers

Malang Regency, August 9, 2025 – Minister for Community Empowerment, Muhaimin Iskandar, officially opened Global Talent Day 2025 in Malang Regency. The event marks the government’s commitment to building a coordinated, sustainable, and globally competitive ecosystem for empowering migrant workers. Through cross-ministerial coordination and collaboration with industry partners, Kemenko PM promotes a holistic approach to preparing prospective migrant workers, not only in technical skills but also in protection, work mentality, and cross-cultural understanding.

Global Talent Day is part of the Perintis Berdaya National Program, specifically under the Global Empowerment pillar, designed to develop Indonesian migrant talents who are resilient in navigating global labor market dynamics. Over two days, participants joined various workshops, mentorship sessions, and interactive discussions to enhance their workplace skills, financial literacy, mental preparedness, and awareness of exploitation risks and illegal recruitment channels.

“Through initiatives like Global Talent Day, the government is committed to ensuring that Indonesians, especially prospective migrant workers, receive comprehensive protection and empowerment. Our focus is no longer solely on protection but also on sustainable capacity building — not only for domestic workers but also in creating skilled, globally competitive Indonesian migrant workers,” said Muhaimin Iskandar, Minister for Community Empowerment, in his remarks.

Minister Muhaimin emphasized the importance of strengthening governance in overseas worker placement, stressing that accelerated coordination between ministries and local governments is crucial to ensure safe, legal migration processes. “Cross-ministerial and regional coordination must be accelerated, especially to close illegal recruitment loopholes and ensure every prospective migrant worker departs through official, safe, and monitored schemes. This is not merely an agenda, it is a national obligation,” he asserted.

Malang Regent, Drs. H. M. Sanusi, M.M., expressed his appreciation for hosting Global Talent Day in Malang Regency. He described the event as a strategic momentum to strengthen local human resource quality and expand access to global training and job information. “This underscores the importance of cross-sector collaboration between central and local governments, the private sector, and civil society. Such collaboration must be sustained to ensure that the empowerment ecosystem can continue to grow,” said Regent Sanusi.

Global Talent Mentorship: Learning from Experience

Several former Indonesian migrant workers (ex-PMI) who have successfully transformed into global talents shared firsthand insights about working abroad, the challenges they faced, and strategies for thriving in international work environments. The open discussion included a Q&A session, allowing participants to gain direct perspectives and practical advice from experienced professionals.

“This initiative represents our concrete effort to bring information and mentorship closer to communities, open relevant learning spaces, and expand access to more decent and protected job opportunities,” said Leontinus Alpha Edison, Deputy for the Coordination of Community Economic Empowerment and Protection of Migrant Workers.

Optimizing Global Talent Through Indonesia–Japan Cooperation

Global Talent Day aims to foster inter-ministerial and institutional collaboration within Indonesia’s migrant worker ecosystem, expanding safe, legal, and protected overseas employment opportunities. All processes — from recruitment and training to placement — are designed to be transparent, meet quality standards, and remain free from brokerage practices or illegal channels.

Through a strategic partnership with the Government of Japan, Indonesia reaffirms its vision to strengthen the global competitiveness of local talent. This collaboration serves as a formal foundation to address existing challenges, create breakthrough solutions, and open broader opportunities for Indonesian talent on the global stage.

A Blend of Education, Inspiration, and Entertainment for Future Migrant Talents

The event also featured an MSME bazaar showcasing creative products made by former and active Indonesian migrant workers (PMI), a tangible testament that migrant workers not only contribute abroad but can also build productive businesses upon returning home. To conclude the event, comedian Nopek Novian delivered an educational performance, bringing humor and light-hearted storytelling to communicate key messages on migration literacy.

Global Talent Day 2025 marks a new phase in the government’s strategy for migrant worker welfare, moving beyond protection to proactive and transformative empowerment, through an end-to-end approach that spans training to post-placement networking.

Kemenko PM hopes this program will serve as a model for migrant talent development in various regions across Indonesia.
